Karma

Karma Ive never been one for actually truly believing in karma (what goes around comes around) but this last Monday pushed me a step or so towards accepting it. Heres how things played out: I woke up on Sunday morning with the plague. Well, maybe not the plague, as plague implies that many many many people are sick, but I definitely had some type of illness that made my life (fun)^-1. The only thing worse than being sick and wanting to die is when you add that to the normal stresses of MIT life. Not a lot compares to wanting to just curl up and die while also knowing you need to spend hours working on 8.02, 2.001, and 18.03. But, as any MIT student will tell you, being sick isnt an excuse to not do homework, so the homework gets done, not exactly fun, and you accept that you are still alive (somebody out there better pick up on this reference). Consequences to doing homework while ill are varied, one of the big ones being the degree of bitterness that leaks from your temporary low feeling of worth onto your homework. This is what happened to me on Sunday. I was working on this wonderful gem of an invention called Mastering Physics (expect a healthy entry about that shortly) and was faced with this prompt: Reading Assignments: On each daily webpage there is a summary of the days material. These summaries are short and reading them will help prepare you for class. This weeks reading assignment is: Course Notes (Liao et al.): Sections 4.3-4.4; Section 5.5; Sections 6.1-6.4; Expt. 2: Faraday Ice Pail. Questions: What was the most confusing thing that you found in the reading assignment? What other questions do you have about any topics that appeared in the reading assignments? We will make a summary of your responses to the questions below and circulate them among the instructors. We will also try to post responses via the Q/A link on the daily webpages. Ok, no big deal, Ill do the reading. Sections 4.3-4.4 went fine, as did 6.1-6.4. Then I read 5.5. I wont go into detail as to what 5.5 was about, suffice it to say that I was not in a pleasant mood after reading it. Ill accept that this was probably mostly due to illness, but a lot of it still holds for the healthy. Ready to give Mastering Physics a piece of my mind, I typed the following as a response: Alright, 5.5 was terrible. People should NOT have to read that. Between the ridiculous notation, the fact that it was located in the middle of a chapter and referenced stuff we hadnt read, and the length, it was all I could do to prevent myself from hurling my course notes into the Charles River. Hopefully you do a better job explaining capacitance in class than these terrible notes. *Submit!* So I get to class on Tuesday and see this: Interesting, that should be a cool demo! I mused Halfway through the class our professor announces that were going to do a demo. Snively, youre going to do this, come on up. Uh-oh. *saunters up to front* This is when I think the karma started. Now, I could be totally wrong here, but this is what it seems like to me. My professor was sitting at home, in his smoking jacket, on a leather couch next to the fireplace, reading Mastering Physics responses while stroking his cat. He came to mine, read it, and thought Hm, Mr. Snively doesnt seem to think that the notes were adequate for learning about capacitance. Well, well have to rectify that in class tomorrow, now wont we Mr. Snuggles? *cat purrs, agreeing* So here I am, holding a lever attached to what appears to be a very large capacitor. My professor backs up. Dont pull that until Im far enough away, he warned me. Wonderful. Suddenly our demo-lab tech ran into the room and yelled Wait! He came over to the demo lab, messed with some knobs, and said Ok, now its good to go. Im convinced that I may have died if he hadnt done whatever he did. He backed up about 50 ft and stood next to our professor. I stood next to the setup-o-death with my hand on a lever. Ok, pull the lever. my prof said. *Pulls lever* *CRRRRAAAAACCCCCCKKKKKKK BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMM* Holy **** Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!! ****! Biggest explosion you will ever see in a classroom, ever. A wire stretching between the leads of this massive capacitor (that was charged to 3,000 V) vaporized into a shower of sparks and my ears were ringing for a good 5 minutes after pulling the lever. The entire class recoiled, screamed, or shouted obscenities. Nobody was expecting anything of that magnitude, especially me. I walked quietly over to my seat while everybody else looked around wide-eyed, trying to comprehend what just happened. For the next 3 minutes there were little pieces of vaporized wire floating down from the air and landing on our table, a reminder of what had just happened. Alright karma, help me out here, whats going to happen to my professor to make up for this? Ever heard of a Dissectable Leyden Jar? It looks like this: It consists of a metal ring on the outside, a metal ring on the inside thats attached to a metal rod thing sticking up, and a beaker between the two. The gist of it is that if you charge the inner ring you have essentially charged a capacitor. You can discharge it by connecting the inner ring to the outer ring. Our professor charged it, but then took it apart into its three components. He then proceeded to rub the metal rings all over himself, tap them together, and ground them pretty effectively. Then he reassembled the makeshift capacitor and discharged it. *CRACK* It had maintained its charge! The class assumed it was magic. I mean, how can you ground something and still maintain the charge? He waited a while before coming back to the demo again, hoping that we had figured out how it worked. He repeated the procedure, charging the capacitor, disassembling it, and then grounding the metal rings a bunch. We decided that the charge couldnt possibly be charged in the metal. The only thing left was the beaker, but he picked that up too and proceeded to rub it around and ground it. We sat there totally confused as he said stuff like Look! I can do anything I want to this beaker! I can rub it on my head, touch it all around here, touch it against my face, put it *CRACK!* Oh ****! [cue uproar of laughter from class] Apparently the charge difference had been stored between the outside and inside of the beaker, and guess where he had accidentally stuck his finger. Thats right, into the beaker. The class, at this point, was dying from the hilarity of it all. Honestly, we had people on the floor, everybody else was at least tearing up. We ended up being dismissed 10 minutes early because I think he realized that no more learning was going to be possible after something like that. We all left, still laughing and talking about the capacitor incident. So folks, thats how karma works. Its like simple harmonic motion, oscillating events of varying unpleasantry between two individuals for as long as it cares to. Just another electrifying day here at the tute.

We Need a Precise Definition of Terrorism Essays - 1568 Words

We Need a Precise Definition of Terrorism In early 1974, the Secretary General of the United Nations, U Thant, invited the Palestinian Liberation Organization to attend the General Assembly gathering on November 13, 1974, and in doing so gave legitimacy to the Palestinian Liberation Organization as a governing body. In Yasser Arafat’s speech to the General Assembly, he thanked the United Nations for recognizing his organization and its legitimacy. When Arafat addressed the General Assembly, he made the argument that the actions taken by his government were not acts of terrorism, but these were acts of revolution and their purpose was to regain control of Palestine’s occupied original territory. When the United Nations General Assembly partitioned off the Palestinian land in 1948, the Palestinian people rejected their planed creation of a Jewish S tate within their homeland. Shortly after its creation, Israel began expelling Palestinians and Muslims from their land and from their homes. The Palestinians that were able to remain within the borders of Israel were treated as third class citizens (second-class citizens were the Asians and Jews) and had to notify the Israeli Military of all their movements. 1 This is when the people of Palestine began their efforts to retake their land that rightfully belonged to them. Arafat believed the actions taken by the Palestinian Liberation Organization against the Israeli Government and agents of the government were not terrorist actions, but were revolutionary actions. The injustice placed upon the Palestinian people by the Israeli Government justified the Palestinian’s the right to struggle. Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer Essay - 735 Words

Over the past decade, advances in the field of cloning have allowed for the possibility of human cloning. By using the process of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), in which the DNA from an adult cell is transferred into an unfertilized egg, scientists have developed the ability to clone numerous types of animals related to humans. Cloning has proven to be useful in several areas of science, improving scientists understanding of the functions of genes and the cell cycle. In addition, scientists are on the path toward using cloning in order to create organs, tissues, and other technologies useful for the treatment of humans with serious diseases. Another key improvement in cloning was the use of unfertilized oocytes in the making of the clone zygote rather than using enucleated fertilized eggs (Lewis 2001). Previously, scientists had used already fertilized eggs in order to create clone zygotes. However, this technique was ineffective because most cells did not survive longer than the blastocyst phase (Lewis 2001). By coordinating the cell cycles of the donor somatic nucleus and using immature unfertilized eggs, the newly fertilized oocytes were able to divide and develop beyond the stage of the blastocyst (Lewis 2001). The most important improvement in the method of cloning was Wilmut and Campbells control of the cell cycles of the donor cell nucleus (Chye 2001). They were able to cause the cells to enter G0, a stable stage from which to transfer the somatic cell nuclei, by removing the serum from the cells in the culture (Chye 2001). Since they were able to determine which stage the nuclei were from, the nuclei used to create the fertilized oocytes were in the proper phase of the cell cycle as to promote growth and development (Chye 2001). The embryo was then activated with the use of an electrical pulse, and left for several days to mature (Chye 2001). This concept may be applied to agricultural sector in wider perspectives by the research and extension scientists in a range of areas with different size, aim, and beliefs. Agri- livestock based activities In present day life large numbers of single old couples, young and job couples, working men and women, students, etc. are residing in apartments and colonies of sub-urban and urban areas for their currier. Majority of them have neither time nor knowledge and strength for numbers of works in the day to day life. It may be good opportunity for service as well as social entrepreneurship. Under â€Å"social entrepreneurship† activities may include; home delivery of milk, milk products, animal products, bread, butter, grocery items, cut as well as fresh vegetables, flowers and garlands for home worship, herbal products, cut flowers, articles of gardening, commodities for small-small functions, and many more. The individual demand schedule for such items may be a small but cumulative and total demand schedule will be quite a large amount. Small scale pet clinics at pet owners’ door step, veterinary consultancy services in remote and hilly areas may be few such steps for veterinary profession. The demand of animal based products are finding good place in the diversified food basket of all the people. These include and may be included by motivation i.e. Fluid milk (pasteurized, flavoured, sterilized, toned, homogenized, etc. milk); Functional milk products (Low calorie dairy milk products, vitamin ; mineral fortified products, probiotic dairy products); Fat rich products, heat desiccated as well as acid coagulated, fermented, and many such kinds of dairy products. Large number of unemployed graduates is running for small and petty jobs, they may be the job giver rather job seekers through such activities. They may identify activities as per their choice and may form a group or co-operative society for this work and in due course of time may deploy other unemployed literates and illiterates young force of the area and activity as per the size of enterprise. Besides there are many other need based activities that may be started for the society like; dog crutch, training, modern nursing. In the process of social entrepreneurship one thing entrepreneur must realize that, numbers of persons work till late night and accordingly they wake-up late in the morning. Therefore regular disturbance in this process of social entrepreneurs is intolerable. As per current culture they also want time tag and management from entrepreneurs. One of the prime protections in this enterprise required is the trust of public and your commitments. Key categories of social enterprises Groups focused on social entrepreneurship may be divided into several categories viz.; community-based enterprises, socially responsible enterprises,   social services professionals, and socio-economic enterprises. Community-based enterprises are based on social ventures of an entire community that uses its culture and capital to empower itself as an entire enterprise. There are organizations dedicated to empowering social entrepreneurs, connecting them with mentors, strengthening their enterprise models, and preparing them for capital investments. Help of such organizations may also be taken to initiate the enterprise. Models of social entrepreneurship These may fall under three different models, applicable in different situations and socio-economic environments; Non-Profit influenced: This model influences resources to respond social needs. It makes innovative use of available funds to impact need bur are more traditional in dealing with issues. They are distinguished by their innovative approaches. Hybrid Non-Profit: This structure is willing to use profit to sustain its operations. It can take variety of operations. Such organizations are often created to deal with government or market failures, as they generate revenue to sustain the operation to meet out loans, grants, and other forms of traditional funding. Community Business Project: This model aims to fetch changes through social means. They lack funding and hence forced to become for profit but not to the extent as others due to social service. Role of Technology The Internet and social network sites have been pivotal resources for the success and collaboration of many social entrepreneurs. Presently, Internet has become useful in disseminating information in shortest possible time. In addition, Internet allows pooling of design resources using open source principles. These media allow ideas to be heard by broader audiences, help networks and investors to develop globally, and to achieve their goals with little or no start-up capital. For example, open source appropriate technology as a sustainable development paradigm enables people all over the world to collaborate on solving local problems just as open source software development leverages collaboration. The promise of livestock and allied sectors development will be realized through the spread of new ideas and solutions to the challenges facing producers and consumers. Innovations and opportunities have potential to help millions of smallholder farmers and build better lives for themselves and their families. But it is also true that innovations alone do not create sustainable solutions in agriculture and sustainable rural development. These new solutions endure only when social entrepreneurs have a community-level understanding, build a broad citizen base of support, introduce incentives for participation, and bring down traditional barriers to entry. This partnership will allow launching social entrepreneurs and their powerful, pattern-changing ideas that are built on this bottom up approach. Additionally, as a product of the increased number of entrepreneurs in this area and their broad base of supporters, agencies will be able to identify transformative principles that will ultimately revolutionize the field. From a very macro point of view, social entrepreneurs want large scale societal change in realigning our otherwise misconstrued social pyramid to place our rural communities, farmers and women artisans at the very top for the respect and standing they deserve. Economic, environmental ; human development are tools they want to use to truly create that fundamental change and they are learning to differentiate their decisions from the typical startup way. Low cost Franchising: It is one of the ways to take-up new venture. Franchises with lower costs can make it easier to plan to be their own boss. Here is a look to harvest successful opportunities. Primary stakeholders of the system: government ; policy makers, scientists ; research organizations, local farmers ; rural communities, industry, private enterprises, entrepreneurs, partners, supporting organizations ; collaborators regular consumers. Franchises decided to connect four concepts: Lab – Farm – Machine – Market, with the aim of creating a business that connects the benefits for local farmers and industry with reformation of livestock and agriculture sector. The challenge in this way is that we as a business are not yet capable to innovate in laboratories, develop best product preparation methods or processing machinery. But what we can do to fulfill the need for organized effort to create a confluence and an ecosystem for various stakeholders to collaborate, deliberate, co-create and develop. Franchises act as enablers and facilitators to set up and develop the entire industrial ecosystem with the vision to reform the sector with its active role in the socio-economic uplift of farmers. They also work in collaboration with various public and private organizations that ranges from research institutes, government bodies and NGOs. Their final aim remains to create a self sustaining high yielding, high value livestock industry that involves a value chain of livestock producers, processors, packaging companies, marketers to engage local farmers and women artisans from the rural communities. Through startup: Social entrepreneurship may also be started through a startup company. A startup is an entrepreneurial venture or a new business in the form of a company, partner, temporary organization designed to search for a repeatable and scalable business. These companies generally newly created and are innovative in a process of development, validation and research for target markets. Finally the essence of startups is generally related to the concepts of ambition, innovation, scalability, and growth. Startup as an â€Å"organization formed to search for a repeatable and scalable business model. Thinking in this way may lead the livestock as well as social sector to a new direction. The budding veterinarians and other concerned with livestock sector may play their vital role to boostup the sector. How to cite What Is the Role of Social Enterprise In Society?, Papers

Caliban and Ferdinand Essay Example For Students

Caliban and Ferdinand Essay I thoroughly agree with the statement. Prospero has a close and understanding relationship with Miranda. I believe that they understand each other to an extent; this initiates a certain amount of trust between them quote. Although Miranda questions her fathers decisions, ultimately she trusts his choices and is easily led to believe by Prospero that whatever he is doing is merciful, morally correct and is in her best interests. I believe that Prospero truly believes that, and that what he is dong is best for his daughter. Prospero always tries to protect Miranda even if it means leading her to believe that a situation is more acceptable than it really is So safely ordered, that there is no soul. He sees Miranda as his cherubin. Therefore we are led to believe that Miranda is his metaphorical guardian angel. It was her that possibly saved Prospero and gave him the power and opportunities that he has today Thou wast that did preserve me. This affectionate language shows that Prospero shows a great love for his daughter and that perhaps he knows that Miranda is his savour; therefore he must treat her with great admiration and affection. It is obvious that Miranda as well as his powers is what keeps Prospero going. I believe that although he has his powers, without Miranda, Prospero would not be as determined as he is now and that is what shows he is a sensitive, concerned and compassionate father. Miranda is a sensitive character and although we see her pleading with her father as she is against his actions, he soon convinces her that his actions lead to no harm. Due to the fact that Miranda discontinues her worrying, she trusts her fathers reassurance and therefore respects him Heavens thank you fort. And now I pray you sir.  The respectfulness and understanding in the relationship is shown in the language that they use. Although Prospero occasionally puts Miranda back in her place, he uses considerate, comforting and respectful language Lie there my art. Wipe thou thine eyes; have comfort While Miranda fights for what she believes is right and pleads with her father in a distressing manner, when Prospero reassures her and advises her not to worry, she directly discontinues to worry and question her father. These uses of language between the father and daughter show that they both understand and respect each other greatly. It is also clear that Prospero truly loves and cares for his daughter. Prospero is a tyrannical with Caliban. He treats him with no respect and shows no consideration towards his new slave Upon thy wicked dam, come forth. This relationship is beyond the customary master/slave relationship. Although Prospero treats Caliban as his slave, Prospero takes the authority to another level of ruthlessness. Caliban is seen as inferior and something that isnt worthy of any consideration or adequate treatment. To Prospero, Caliban doesnt deserve treatment of that of a human. We can see this because of the way that Prospero treats his other slave Ariel. Although Prospero treats Ariel as his slave, he has a greater level of concern and admiration for him But are they, Ariel, safe?. Therefore it is apparent that Prospero sees Caliban as nothing more than an undeserving brute. However I believe that Prospero would certainly not have this authority over Caliban if it were not for his powers Ill rack thee with old cramps. The island that Prospero now claims as his could be just as much Calibans as it was him who was the first on the island and before Prospero arrived, he was the only one there and therefore he was never told what to do. The theme of colonialism and the idea that Prospero discovered the island is one of the reasons that Prospero bullies Caliban. Prospero also knows that he has the power and can get Caliban to perform anything, without his magic I believe that he wouldnt have the power to accomplish Caliban for the authority of the island and maybe even Caliban would succeed him. .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 , .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 .postImageUrl , .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 , .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5:hover , .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5:visited , .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5:active { border:0!important; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5:active , .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5 .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud2d1c049c04f455aa90d820fe0c9d7f5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson EssayCaliban feels that the island is his territory and cannot understand why he has to behave in a method that he is not familiarized with. We can see this when we discover Mirandas attempted rape. I trust that Caliban only attempted this because that is what he is familiar to; he is acting like a usual creature that is accustomed to reproduce. However Prospero doesnt understand this, and like a usual father he wants to protect his daughter. This is another reason for prospero to treat Caliban with no value and as a beast. The language used between the two is obviously dominated by Prospero; however he doesnt only command Caliban but he is also constantly insulting and abusing him Thou poisonous slave, got by the devil himself. Although Caliban attempts to fight back, unfortunately it is only words and Prospero can easily punish and overcome him using his authority gained from magic Thou shalt be pinched. The case of Prospero being a sensitive father towards Miranda is shown during the phase when he is vindictive towards Ferdinand. Prospero is like this towards Ferdinand because on meeting Miranda, he immediately falls in love with her. Prospero believes he can use this situation for his own advantage and persuades Ferdinand to believe that he can only have Miranda at a price One word more. I charge thee This use of his daughters love for the first real man she has encountered shows that Prospero takes pleasure in using his power to threaten vulnerable people and therefore can be quite wicked in his doings. However can we believe that he is truly evil; as it is clear that Prospero has a great love for Miranda and eventually takes her thoughts and feelings into consideration. We could debate that Prospero is now used to the idea of being in control of anyone who sets foot on his island. This is due to the fact that when he arrived, the only sign of human life was a creature, which in his eyes was an uncivilised beast that attempted to rape his daughter. So can we sympathise with him for acting this way or should we empathize with those who he controls and mistreats such as Caliban, Ariel and Ferdinand. Evidently I agree with the statement and believe that although Prospero is a tyrannical with Caliban and Ferdinand, he loves his daughter and in my view, exceptions can be made for his behaviour. However Caliban and Ferdinand deserve more respect due to the fact that they act within their instincts and characteristics of which they have no control over. Coincidently Prospero also has his own views and instincts on issues such as power and control over, what he believes to be, his own island.

Art appreciation class Essay Example

Art appreciation class Essay Example Art appreciation class Paper Art appreciation class Paper Aesthetics simply means relating to, appreciating, or perceiving the beautiful. Beauty, if it can be defined simply, means whatever captures your heart for that moment in time that you have been blessed. We are always told that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think it is the perspective of that eye that makes anything even more beautiful. Beauty can be something to perceive or observe, but only when the spectator becomes a participant, can someone truly begin to appreciate it for all that it may have to offer. Many people may agree that something is beautiful, but the depth of that beauty can eventually become fathomless beyond the point of imagination if experienced. I remember fondly when, as children, we would run wildly across the field and lie on our backs as we let the blades of grass tickle our ears while the warm summer wind blew across the yard and swirled around us. The leaves of the trees could be heard taking deep breaths for the thicket just across the fence from where we would be. We would lie there gazing at the sky as the stage full of performing clouds of every shape and size would dance in front of us. For the adults, it must have appeared that our internal engines had finally run out of gas as we would limply fall or jump on the ground, when actually, play had merely taken a different form for a while. Those memories and visions are beautiful to think about; especially when considering the simplicity of life back then, and even more fun to remember when time stops and allows for reflection. Aesthetics is, as a parent, being able to watch my kids do similar things and it warms my heart like a warm July sun. Hearing the laughter ring through the air as they run and jump and play games that are not full of restricting rules, and barriers of guidance; watching them as they run in circles chasing leaves that are blowing across the ground, or catching flutter-bys on the wildflowers in the meadow. It is almost as if they are teasing the children to try and catch them if they can, and as the tiny creature grows weary of the game, it simply flies higher into the sky, out of reach, and away from the commotion. The children are simply bound by the ideal of being able to be together and have fun. Falling down means you simply get back up and run again without concern of hurt or pain because you have a task at hand that needs immediate attention have fun. Somewhere in the deepest part of all our lives, is a special moment in time where we thought we could live forever. The days of Peter Pan and Wendy and never growing up were at one point in our lives, something we thought we could do; some may have even believed they could fly like those fabled characters or have powers like their favorite superhero. So if the saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder is true, then things like hearing a babys laugh, and seeing a childs first steps; or looking into your lovers eyes must surely be things of beauty. But when it is all said and done, in those last fleeting moments of life, if there is a loved one to offer a hand to hold, then all things transcend from being beautiful, and they become priceless.

Open System Theory in Nursing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Open System Theory in Nursing - Essay Example Various associations exist between the environment and the systems outlined. After the patient acquires a MRSA infection, various departments have to make some amendments in the way they operate. Isolation of the patient profoundly affects the admissions, dietary, billing, and utilization review departments involved in the management of the patient. These departments have to alter the patients' records and management so as to comply with the new change of the environment i.e. MRSA infection (Johnson & Webber, 2010). In addition, there is the improvement in the overall services offered to the patient in terms of the hiring of a consultant and acquisition of equipment. Moreover, it is mandatory for the patient’s visitors and health care providers to wear protective clothing in the presence of the patient. From the case study, an increase in the severity of the environmental factors leads to a bolder response by the system and the subsystems. Strict measures are thus applied if t he condition of a patient deteriorates. From the case study, Mr. Michaels, Mrs. Courts, and other health service providers are justifiable in the way that they react to the situation of the MRSA patient. Their reasoning is aimed at restricting the transmission of the MRSA and improving the patient’s quality of life while remaining accountable. This is observed through measures of quarantine and the use of protective gear and sterilization in the presence of the patient to both visitors and health care providers.

Online Bookstore E-marketing Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Online Bookstore E-marketing - Term Paper Example Online bookstores have altered the way in which readers and writers interact and are expected to have a huge impact on the book retail business in the future. Starting a website to sell books will benefit Book Bunker in numerous ways, not least by increasing their stock space. Physical bookstores are limited in space, which is not a problem for online bookstores. Online bookstores are perfect for popular titles as well as rare ones, thus being a perfect avenue for Book Bunker as these rare titles receives the same space in relation to popular titles on the bookstore’s website. Ordering rare titles online will take the same time for delivery, as it would be for popular titles. Online bookstores are also convenient for customers in rural areas; they do not require physical access and are open for 24 hours including winter. Finally, an online bookstore will allow customers to post reviews about titles, which will aid Book Bunker since this feedback will affect the ratings of the title online, especially for rare titles, and will make for a unique interactive shopping experience that will attract other customers to the site. Online Bookstore Website Design One thing that needs to be considered when designing a website for a book store is that Book Bunker should ease up for their clients to buy titles and make the experience unique and interactive (Gay et al, 2010). The website should provide the client with extra information on top of the author and title. A system such as this has search as its lifeblood, and thus, it should include all information that a person browsing for a book would be searching for, including name, types of available copies, information on editions and whether it constitutes of a bigger pack (Gay et al, 2010). Simply, the website must capture and maximize the physical bookstore experience as much as possible. The website should also provide an opportunity for customers to add information on the titles that Book Bunker does not have, s uch as literary events, reading marathons, envision lists, book clubs, book marks, discussion boards, ratings, tagging, and detailed reviews. The website should also be designed in such a way that it works as a link between customers and suppliers with the store acting as an intermediary (Gay et al, 2010). Therefore, it becomes irrelevant whether the book is in stock. Book Bunker should factor in flags and notifications in their website coupled to appropriate icons, as well as allow effective forms to input and wish lists. Book Bunker also needs to network its website with other similar bookstores in order to possess a comprehensive catalogue, which caters to all book readers in multiple formats. This will also allow a review system that provides valuable and honest advice for purchase (Gay et al, 2010). The website should also possess the look inside section where the customer is allowed to have a peek into the book before buying it. Redemption facilities such as gift vouchers shou ld also be included in the website, as well as making it easier to order, pre-order, back-order, and return books (Gay et al, 2010). In addition, the website needs to be colorful and attractive on top of the text and white background, even with the necessity of optimization and fast loading. There should be a visual color-coded separation between the books to make it appealing to search for books. The site should also allow for a trail-back to the previous link levels clicked to get to the book itself in case the client decides that the clicked book is not the correct one (Gay et al, 2010). The â€Å"list page† should be in grid-style, which would enable Book Bunker to list more books with reduced vertical scroll. This would also allow the bookstore to increase the

Pros and cons of Information technology

Pros and cons of Information technology Introduction: To get an answer to this question we need to formerly understand the pros and cons of information technology. The article published by Nicolas Carr â€Å"IT doesnt matter† does raise a couple of eyebrows, especially of those belonging to the IT sector. But I have had to really understand what his view point is in order to get an answer to this mind boggling question does IT matter? Despite my attempts to understand why according to him IT doesnt matter I can only jump to one conclusion i.e. computers, data storage facilities, data processing facilities, etc are easily available to all. Mr. Carrs point of view is that businesses across the globe are resorting to IT to give them a better edge over one another and thereby spend trillions of dollars over technology that is easily available to all. So there is hardly an â€Å"advantage† that companies have over one another. Mr. Carr does accept that today Information technology has become the backbone of commerce. At all times its tough to intricate a line between where the technology ends and use of it begins. During previous years industries didnt had a systematic approach in some of the technical and financial aspects. One must not forget that a new ray of light has arisen due to the presence of Information Technology in the field of commerce, science, telecommunication, security and different manufacturing processes. Industries could make those products which would meet the demands of international consumers. This would improve the trade relationship among different companies and countries. Nowadays all the work which were done manually have now become computerized. With a single click any customer can place an order for different number of varieties at any place at any given time. Nowadays companies are more dependent on IT fields for protection against vulnerabilities. There are intelligence tools like business intelligence reporting tools that help not only to store and retrieve data ( that account for huge memory spaces that would be nearly impossible to keep track of using the age old technique of accounting manually) but also analyze data and generate reports thereby reducing the load of understanding and analyzing data to make strategic decisions (www.smallbusinessbible.com).Many companies have merged with IT companies to form a secured data system which would not only protect their data system but also enhances their capability to meet the customer needs. Today businesses race not to come up with intellectual schemes to achieve success but to do so before any body else does. Time is of the essence and that is where IT enters. IT has become a day to day necessity in our life. It has brought a major impact in business and society. It has driven a rising economy to a developed economy. In todays day to day activities personal computers, mobile phones, emails, fax machines and internet has not only become our support system but has also become an integral part of our life (www.smallbussinessbible.com). IT is present everywhere but its important aspects should be harnessed evenly and properly so that it is used to its core. They are present everywhere and become an indispensable commodity of any industry. It plays a key factor in evaluating many of the new technologies assisting new infrastructural projects. IT has not only brought the world closer together, but has permitted the worlds economy to boom. It means that we can share information at high speeds and at high efficient rate, without any linguistic and geographic barriers. All the information can now be shared in a well organized and resourceful manne r interesting jobs. IT plays a very important role in foreign exchange. It acts as a customer relationship manager who tries to solve the problems. FOREX capital markets have arisen due to the presence of IT industry. As the company boasts from 1999 till date it has 15000 clients in over 80 countries and has an average trading volume that exceeds $15billion (OBrien and James, (1936)). Due to continuous efforts and development in the IT field, the companies could easily handle their customers and also the various salespeople who work hard for the company. It tries to manage various aspects of the company even though the company is located in different countries, having linguistic barrier. IT has increased the probability of developing new and innovative jobs. The world has progressed into a global village with the help of information technology which has allowed countries like India and Russia who are separated by time, distance, language and geographic boundaries to disclose ideas, facts and data with each other. Information Technology has helped to communicate at cheaper, faster, and more efficient rate. With the help of video conferencing work can now be completed at home without any wastage of time and money. Text messages have added extra wings to communication which facilitates quick responses. Video conferencing has added a midas touch to the world of communication which by opening up the face to face direct communication facility all round the world (www.smallbusinessbible.com). Information Technology has provided immense help to condense the cultural gap among people belonging to different to communicate with one another thus allowing exchange of thoughts and opinions which results increased awareness and reduced prejudice. Due to computerization, businesses have become lucrative money-spinning machines thus increasing the productivity which results into increase in profits (www.smallbusinessbible.com). This results in increased profitability, productivity, and overall development. This in turn results in pay, enhanced and much better working conditions. It is be because of Information Technology that business are now open 24 x7 all round the world. This means that a business can be open anytime anywhere, making purchases from different countries easier and more convenient. It also means that you can have your goods delivered right to your doorstep with only a click of a button. Amazon and eBay have established themselves as hubs of commerce when it comes to consumer online shopping. They are development activity where openness breeds innovation and innovation generates sales. Its chief technology officer Al Vermeulen says that they think web services feeds directly into making that flywheel spin. It has not only served different purposes of different fields of business but has increased the capability of the companies to be more productive and profitable in terms of market values. They have changed the market rules (OBrien and James (1936)). The best advantage of information technology is the formulation and development of new and interesting jobs. Huge development has been brought in diagnosing disease and damage to the body with the help of body scanners which use software to process the information produced to assist us with maps of body. Experienced doctors train their junior doctors with the aid of new IT technologies. Computers help surgeons to operate effectively and swiftly. Siemens Healthcare provides with efficient and integrated solutions for support processes, from building automation and security to data centres and communication. They are the specialist in the state of the art imaging, laboratory diagnostics and IT solution for an earlier prevention and more specific diagnosis thus enhancing patient care. It ensures security and access control (www.med.usa.siemens). Moreover IT plays a very important role in overall development of an economy. IT can change an undulated economy into improved one. According to me IT is not the standard package which has answers to every question you ask. Right amount of planning and forecast is key to success for IT applications. IT has given world the best of its results but it again depends on how you apply to a problem. So in case of IT we have to be double cautions and this is very well explained by Hilton Hotels. Hilton hotel via Texas based Hilton reservation worldwide have developed fastest reservation system. Hilton hotels have more than 2400 hotels located in 65 countries and Hilton worldwide reservation (HRW) handles around 31 million call and generate more than 9 million reservation annually. And the amazing fact about this system is despite of this incredible volume the average reservation time in just two minutes. Information Technology has given this level of efficiency and customer service. How this amazing system works, well when there is a call to HRW through dialled number identification services it is identified that customer is call ing. Immediately call is then transferred to reservation specialist who uses Hilton hotel room availability information. The information regarding the availability of room is displayed on the specialists desktop as the call is transferred. Then if customer is demanding some other place the specialist can click online screen button to start a search. Within seconds specialist can scan through entire database of Hilton property. Further innovative application is automated reservation system. In this there is interactive voice response system. Once the agent is finished with the reservation then call is transferred to IVR. In interactive voice response system customer hear back and confirms his reservation. Due to this outstanding customer service system Hilton hotel are among the top guns in the market (OBrien and James,(1936)). Most civil engineers practice in specialized subsets of civil engineering, such as geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, hydraulic engineering, environmental engineering and land surveying (www.wikipedia.com). A number of new software tools are available relating to the different specialized disciplines. Some software houses have attempted to provide design software catering for the variety of infrastructure design fields in an integrated manner for example: Civil Designer which uses the AllyCAD CAD engine or VisionCivil which uses AutoCAD and MicroStation. Allycad is a CAD software application for 2D design and drafting. It is developed by Knowledge Base and is used internationally. It was originally developed by Paul Harper. Microstation is the technique used by many of the international companies to design structures of national and geographic importance. Infrastructure design relies heavily on estimates of load, pressure, drainage and flow. Different software packages rely on different formulae and theories as the basis for these calculations. Popular storm drainage simulation models include for example the Rational Method, ILLUDAS, SWMM and HYMO all of which have their own proponents and associated academic debates (www.wikipedia.com). Examples of how companies have used Information technology to develop competitive strategies. Strategy company Strategic use of IT Business Benefits. Cost Leadership Dell Computers Online Build to order lower cost producer Priceline. Com Online seller bidding buyer-set pricing eBay.com Online auction Auction -set prices. Innovation AVENT Marshall Customer/suppler Increase in market share Moen Inc. Online customer design Increase in market share Growth Citi Group Global Intranet. Increase in global market Toys ‘R Us Inc. POS inventory tracking Market leadership Alliance Cisco systems virtually manufacturing Agile market leadership Alliances While Information Technology has outshined the business process it has also created job cutting, downsizing and outsourcing. It has immensely affected the middle and lower level thus creating more unemployment. Wal-Mart introduced RFID technology, RFID means Radio Frequency Identification. It is a data carrying and automatic identification technology used throughout industry. Information about an item is stored in the RFID tag which is attached to that item. RFID tag is just like a data carrier, just as some as that of a bar code. Data carried by the barcode is scanner with the help of an optical or infrared wavelength. RFID reader emits radio waves which activates the tag. Wireless communication takes place with the tag known as air-interface. Importance feature of an RFID system is it does not require any tag or label to read its stored data. It enhances customer service, employer safety and enhances productivity of a company. It is very helpful in medical field too. Wrist tag ens ures complete accuracy to identify patience. But this technology has created a huge lot of unemployment. Many of the working lower class employees would have been affected in negative manner because of this technology. From mobile phone signal interceptions to email hacking, people are now worried about their once private information becoming public knowledge. Industry experts believe that the internet has made job security a big issue as since technology keeps on changing with each day. It means that one has to keep himself/herself updated with the latest technology in order to keep his or her job secured (www.wiki.answers.com). But over usage of IT management becomes tedious tiresome. Even though information is readily available, confidential matters can be assessed unless they are properly password protected. IT leads to unemployment due to downsizing outsourcing. IT leads to tampering of many private issues which has to be kept away from light. Privacy issues are of major concern due to rise in growth of technology. Hacking of email, breach of security are major issues due to advancement in information technology. IT leads to lack of job security. Due to hardware failure economies can be affected negatively. It may result in failure of stock markets (www.associatedcontent.com). Internet often results in breaching of copyright. Nowadays viruses are spread via internet. Pornographic issues are of serious concern. It only affects a person physically but mentally too. It disturbs normal Most of the viruses get transferred via e-mails or when certain information is downloaded. These viruses damage many of the important documents which are of utmost importance. Collecting information from internet wastes a lot of time. Conclusion: In conclusion, I believe that Mr. Nicholas Carr to some extent does believe that the advantages I stated with regard to IT are noteworthy and something that are the most desired technologies. But what I seem to understand is that he is neither upset with the innovations in information technology nor with the fact that IT has helped make businesses go global but with the inability of these technologies to remain exclusive to companies that make use of them. Also I believe that today e-commerce has reached a point of no return. And as much as some companies believe that they need to stop spending extravagantly on software the fear of lagging behind or being out of the race to become the numero uno prevents them from doing so. It has become more like â€Å"if you cant beat `em join `em† Personally. I personal feel that there is lot of room for the development of IT in most of the developing country. In India still we have to struggle a lot with our daily chores. Forgive me for s ounding too dramatic when I say this, but the process for doing these chores meant standing and waiting in long queues in the hot sun for a minimum of 3 hours before I could reach the counter and there were one too many times when the counter would close for lunch the instant it would be my turn. But net banking has made this phase of my life disappear. Now my bills are paid, tickets are booked within minutes and I dont have to bother about what is happening at the back-end. As a student I could learn more about this institute and apply here which was also possible thanks to the internet. Gaming, entertainment, chatting, video conferencing with my family back home have helped me feel slightly less homesick. It could be that I cannot or probably do not want relate to Mr. Nicolas Carrs point of view for my own selfish reasons and so for me on a very personal level IT does matter†¦ Reference: OBrien and James (1936) Management Information systems -8th edition-Boston, London: McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2008. http://www.smallbusinessbible.org/advan_disadvan_informationtechnology.html [Accessed:16 November 2009] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/civil_engineering_software [Accessed:15 November 2009] Carr Nicolas G. Construction contract Essay

An excellent submission, Welcome to this subject, a good start to this subject with this first assignment. My name is Cliff McSorley; I will be marking your assignments for this subject. Part 1 Good analysis and detailed response to both parts of this question. This is quite a problematic question, it would be something you would most likely do with the assistance of a solicitor, however you do need to be aware that changes to a contract is a difficult task and in my opinion always stick with the tried and tested standard contacts. Contracts provided by industry association have been tried and tested in the courts over many years and therefore should provide adequate protection for you the contractor. Part 2 – Home Warranty Insurance Below is clause 39.2 from AS 4000 Provide a written explanation identifying how you as the contractor can ensure that they do not default on the contract addressing each point from A to E. Provide no more than half a page on each point. 39.2Contractor’s default If the Contractor commits a substantial breach of the Contract, the Principal may, by hand or by certified post, give the Contractor a written notice to show cause. Substantial breaches include, but are not limited to: a)failing to: i)provide security Excellent response The contractor may be required to obtain a guarantee of the company’s liquidity to complete the project this is done by providing security to the principal Security could be in the form of a) cash; b) retention monies; c) bonds or inscribed stock or their equivalent issued by a national, state or territory government; d) interest bearing deposit in a bank e) an approved unconditional undertaking or an approved performance undertaking given by an approved financial institution or insurance company; or f) other form approved by the party having the benefit of security; The most common form of security would be through a bank guarantee failing to do this would be a breach of contract. ii)provide evidence of insurance; Again well answered A contractor must effect and maintain insurances as stipulated in the contract and present copies of these to the client on commencement of the work and provide the customer a copy of the policy and a certificate of currency at any time requested by the client. iii)comply with a direction of the Superintendent pursuant to subclause 29.3; Subclause 29.3 addresses any defective workmanship and materials provided by the subcontractor under this clause if the superintendent becomes aware of any defective workmanship the superintendent shall as soon as practicable give the contractor written details thereof. If the defective workmanship or materials are not rectified the superintendent may direct the contractor to either a) remove the material from the site b) demolish the work c) reconstruct, replace or correct the work and d) not deliver it to site If a) the contractor fails to comply with such a direction; and b) that failure has not been made good within 8 days after the contractor receives written notice from the superintendent that the principal intends to have the  subject work rectified by others at the cost of the contractor The superintendent may also direct the contractor that the principal is willing to accept the subject work, whereupon there shall be a deemed variation. iv) use the materials or standards of work required by the Contract; Again well answered. b) wrongful suspension of work; Again well answered. c) substantial departure from a construction program without reasonable cause or the Superintendent’s approval; Again well answered. d) where there is no construction program, failing to proceed with due expedition and without delay; and  Well answered, the contract would have a date for practical completion, therefore this is a timeframe that the has to meet, so even if there is an absence of a construction program the contractor still needs to progress the job in a reasonable time line. This time line would judge as what a reasonable time frame for carrying out a job would be. This would be judged on a job by job basis and things like the detail, materials, ease of access and size of the work would all need to be taken into account. The contractor was seen to be progressing the job at a reasonable rate in respect to his resources (eg. size of the company) throughout the construction process, failure to do so would be consider to be a substantial breach of contract. e) in respect of clause **, knowingly providing documentary evidence containing an untrue statement. Well answered. Part 3 1) Recommend two (2) different types of contracts for the following types of projects 2) Two well selected contracts, for each project. 3) Using your recommendations above propose what contract would you use and give reasons why for the following projects also identify statutory and legislative requirements of using these contracts. Excellent choice and discussion again with very good explanations on why you have chosen each contract and details of statutory and legislative requirements included to further justify your decisions 4) Describe the process of creating a contractual situation from the point of submitting a Tender to signing a contract and identify each step using construction terminology. For each step also identify using the legal terminology. Well stepped through with good details on legal terminology. An alternate description of the tender process:- Broadly the Tender process after submission of the tender by the contractor, involves the following: Meeting with the principal to clarify aspects of a tender. The Tenderer making a presentation to help promote a tender. Note that the submission of the tender can be construed as a contractual offer which is capable of acceptance by the principal as part of creating binding legal relations. Sometimes the Principal will provide a Letter of Intent to a tenderer telling the tenderer that they are the preferred tenderer and that a contract will be awarded. Whether this Letter of Intent is legally binding depends on the wording of the Letter – in some instances it could be construed as an early works contract. Generally where a Tender process is involved, there is no negotiation with respect to the terms of the proposed contract. Once a tender is accepted by the Principal, a Letter of Acceptance is sent to the tenderer – or a written contract is signed by the Principal and tenderer (Contractor) which forms the basis of the legal relationship between the principal and the tenderer. The contract generally incorporates plans and specif ications. An offer and acceptable of the offer are necessary ingredients in creating a legally binding contract. There must also be consideration, which is generally the tender price, and an intention to create legal relations. Generally the latter can be inferred from the tender process. The above feedback is not provided to contradict your interpretations but to provide response based on my understanding of contracts relating to this  assignment. I hope the comments are useful. I found that you have well analysed the question throughout this assignment and provide well constructed responses to the questions. Please note:- With future assignments you could include a cover page, a contents page and number pages. I also think that it is a good idea to include a footer on each page which includes your name, page number and the date etc.as appropriate (please refer to the link on the OLS under â€Å"Course Information† – â€Å"Overview† – â€Å"Assessment Presentation Guidelines†).

High School and College Life

There are many students who attended college an it changed them both physically and mentally. I am one of those students. Since I began college it started to change me into a better person on many occasions. I have learned to become more responsible, and get the work done. In addition I have to change my attitude or else I will fail my courses; for example my classmate start skipping classes and misbehaves with the professor, which lead him to fail the course.Moving from high school to college is a huge step in everyone’s life. If you don't change your lifestyle for the better reason then you might not reach your goal in college. Once you reach college it’s the time that you start being an adult. The college life has changed me for the better. I am much more responsible in many different ways. I had to change my study habits, or, should I say, I had to get engaged in study habits. In high school I never studied because everything came so easy to me and I could just do t he work, even end up with passing grades. When I reached college I tried to do the same thing and it didn't work. I had to start studying on a daily basis and it was hard for a student like me to change from not doing any work to studying every night and also on the weekends. I wasn't used to doing it at the beginning, but I had to make it a habit or I was not going to reach my goal. Since I began attending college it made me more responsible to make the right decisions. In college you have to make decisions that are very hard.Pressure comes in hard when you get to college; for example you could have a test that you need to study for and there is a party that you want to go to. If you do go to the party then you will fail the test because you did not have any time to study. This is just one example, and there are many more. Another reason that college is a big step is because you are on your own, and you don't have anybody to tell you what to do. Before, in middle and high, school pa rents wake you up to go to school, but when you are in ollege you get up early in the morning to go to class by yourself. College is a life-changing experience for me. I never felt stress in my entire life as I feel as now in college . College is a big source of stress for a variety of reasons, and poor planning often leads to crisis situations. The stress of everyday life in college shows itself in different ways: the expectations of making an A in every course, the fear of doing poorly on tests, and getting worried or nervous over the work. However, it made me realize that you have to go through stress in order to reach you goal because stress is a way of living. College is the most important decision I ever made in my life. It made me realize that without education you won’t be successful. Since I began attending college, it showed me that how life is fast and short you have to be something or else you will feel miserable. The courses in the college are quite stressful for every student, but this is to make us focus and have motive in our work. Attending college also showed me that reality is not like a fairy tale.

Examining Effective Communication - 1192 Words

Examining Effective Communication Communication is a frequent occurrence, yet it is not a simple ordeal. Communication has layers and density. The two primary forms of interpersonal communication are verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication includes the content of speech, as well as factors such as tone of voice, rhythm of speaking, word choice, and emphasis. Experts and researchers in the field of communication assert that nonverbal communication composes more than half of the communication among people. Nonverbal communication has a variety of factors such as eye contact, gestures, body language, and even the dress of the person speaking/communicating. There are principles that people (communicators) can use in order to effectively communicate on a regular basis. Communicators must understand that communication is unavoidable. The most basic and minimal forms of contact are still forms of communication; therefore, communicators should keep this in mind when communicating via any platform, especially in the 21st century, which is a highly mediated and communication heavy moment in human history. Communicators should also abide by the principle that communication is fixed and irreversible to a certain extent. Interpersonal communication, especially interpersonal communication that happens in person, cannot be taken back.
